I have another mk9 with 4.37 that can handle 2. I never used because I have plenty of mk9 parts. I have a webster 400 that I supose is similar to mk4-mk5, internally is a complete diferent trans. The Hewland dog design is somewhat antiquated, as well. Reverse is also less durable than a standard Bug trans. There is no better trans for road racing, but they're noisy, require finesse for street driving, and the ratio selection is rather limited. It was fun for about 6 months, and then became tiresome. Hope this works to somebody that wants to try this gearboxĪt this moment I have on my bug a 912 901 trans with lsd, works great is not cheap either, the lsd is expensive. We can supply anything Hewland from a gear to a gearbox and can offer many obsolete parts. Our transmission experience ranges from the pre Mk1 UDT/Laystall units to the latest sequential gearboxes. The real problem with the hewland is that only the owner can drive the car because almost nobody knows hiw to shift poperly this trabs, and the results can be nasty.ģ.16 gears are not cheap ! Every other gear is adfordable. We are a long established and leading official Hewland distributor and offer both sales and service. I also use central anular hydraulic clutch with 2000lb and is smooth and soft I have other hewland trans in other projects but the mk9 for me is the right one for vw I love the wine from straight cut gears but for some persons is annoyingĬhanging gears is not as easy as mid engine because we need to remove engine and with all the stuff that we add is not fast! I solved this problem with 3.88 r&p and 3.16 first year, the launch is not a problemĮxist a lot of diferent gear ratios, I have more than 30 diferent,īut I found that 2 combination was enough for street with overdrive and short ratios for track Some years ago when I beginning with this trans project, some people told me that this was tried several years ago, the problem was the 3.44 r&p and 2.5 first year. Know how to change gears at this type of dog leg, dog box trans is for me the best driving and purist experience. I used mine a lot of years, very happy, lot of satisfaction I want to know if somebody uses mk9 transaxle in your vw ? These gearsets have the first gear cut directly into the layshaft itself for improved strength. These cars should use "fixed first" gearsets (noted below as 1/4 or 1/5) whenever possible. They are even strong enough for 2.0L applications.įixed First Gearsets: Using very low first gear ratios in a standing start application (Autocross/Solo II) can break slide-on gearsets, even with an FF1600 engine. The "M" gears are the latest, strongest gears available. These genuine Hewland gears fit Webster or Hewland Mk 8 and 9 gearboxes (1 inch diameter layshaft with 6 spline teeth).
